Rob's Statement on Baltimore County Police's Historic Decision to Remain Neutral in County Judge's Race
I am deeply grateful that the Baltimore County Police through its union, FOP Lodge 4, has made the decision to remain neutral in the upcoming judge’s race. I believe that this will be the first time in recent history that the County Police union has shifted from their normal practice of endorsing the incumbents, the so-called ‘Sitting Judges.’
Questions remain unanswered of these Sitting Judges’ commitment to the importance of a cooperative working relationship with law enforcement. While there are honorable candidates in the group, the Sitting Judges have chosen to run together as a slate and their political organization forbids individual endorsements. Therefore, the group must be evaluated as a whole.
While recognizing that a separation of powers is vital to a healthy democracy, I have demonstrated a commitment to working with law enforcement to maintain our safe communities and my record of a cooperative relationship with our police departments is well-developed. During my 6+ years as an Assistant State’s Attorney, I worked closely with members of various police agencies to investigate and prosecute violent criminals to keep our communities safe. During my years as a family law attorney, I assisted law enforcement personnel in a variety of domestic matters. I avidly support our diligent men and women in blue who work so hard to make our county, and our state, such a wonderful place to live and raise a family.
The politics of the situation also cannot be ignored. There are four (4) open judge spots in this election. My success in the election would still mean that three (3) of my opponents are also elected. Rank-and-file officers appear before trial judges daily – indeed, endorsing only me and alienating three (3) judges who will continue could cause the police repercussions, a difficult working environment that I am content to help them avoid.
I’m deeply appreciative of FOP leadership for looking closely at this election and carefully weighing whether each judicial candidate is the right choice to keep Baltimore County safe. I also recognize the delicate balance that must be undertaken by FOP leadership in making an endorsement decision. Actions speak louder than words, and in this election, silence will speak the loudest.
